on my config i needed to use the following:
openssl req -new -x509 -nodes -out /etc/ssl/certs/dovecot.cert -keyout /etc/ssl/private/dovecot.key -days 3650
and for slackware the restart is 
/etc/rc.d/rc.dovecot restart
with newer versions of dovecot the config files are in /etc/dovecot/conf.d/*.conf as well as the basic /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf
to check your existing files if the config is in the separate directory cat /etc/dovecot/conf.d/*.conf&#124;grep ssl
does the trick.]]></description>
